Pat Basford

DIRECTOR OF SOLID FORM SERVICES

Pat’s scientific curiosity began at an early age with a practical experiment into the impact of adding soil to her father’s homebrew. Bringing us to today, with over 30 years of experience within the pharmaceutical industry, Pat is a highly respected solid-state chemist. Her proven ability to deliver optimised solid forms has directly contributed to the development of multiple new medicines.

A collaboration with Prof. Daryl Williams led to the development of the first modern advanced sorption analyser, sparking her passion for the science of water vapor sorption. She is a leading authority on the development of hydrated solid forms and was instrumental in designing hydrate assessment and risk management strategies at Pfizer.

Throughout her career Pat has always been ready and willing to share her knowledge, mentoring multiple PhD students and junior colleagues, discussing novel research with conference participants, and even educating Simon Mayo’s Radio 2 listeners as to why, when placed in a box together, a biscuit becomes soft and a Jaffa cake hard!
